The Calcasoli Chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Vienna. The frescoes, dated 1503, are by Giovanni Maria Falconetto. On the eighteenth-century altar there is a composite assembly of works; the three sixteenth-century paintings are by Niccolò Giolfino: on the left are Saints Rocco and Anthony Abbot, on the right are Saints Sebastian and Bartholomew, and above is a Deposition. In the centre is one of the most representative panels by Liberale da Verona, an illustrious local miniaturist active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
High on a rocky outcrop to the left, an angel emerging from a cloud announces the happy event to the shepherds. Just below, in a cave, we see the Nativity of Jesus. On the right, a colourful procession descends towards the scene depicted in the foreground; this scene is the Adoration of the Magi. In the background of the painting, the landscape is characterised by a river winding past a city rich in bell towers: an allusion to Verona as a small Jerusalem.
